Phonological competition in Mandarin spoken word recognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most of the world’s languages use both segment and lexical tone to distinguish word meanings. However, few studies on spoken recognition in show conflicting results concerning relative contribution (sub-)syllabic constituents, time course how segmental tonal information is utilised. In Experiments 1 & 2, participants listened monosyllabic Mandarin words with presence a phonological competitor, which overlaps either syllable, onset tone, rhyme or just tone. Eye movement only confirmed syllable competition effect. Experiment 3 investigated vs. cue utilisation by manipulating their point divergence (POD) found that POD modulates look trajectories competitors. While listeners can incrementally constrain activation, plays an advantageous role recognition.

Phonological Competition during Spoken-Word Recognition in Infants and Adults
An ongoing debate concerns whether spoken word recognition happens in an incremental or continuous manner (Marslen-Wilson & Zwitserlood, 1989; McClelland & Elman, 1986). In the current study, participants (31 adults and 49 infants aged 24-30months) were presented with four images while they heard a sentence like “Look at the cat”. Among the images was one object that rhymed with the spoken word...

متن کاملCompetition and segmentation in spoken word recognition
Spoken utterances contain few reliable cues to word boundaries, but listeners nonetheless experience little difficulty identifying words in continuous speech. The authors present data and simulations that suggest that this ability is best accounted for by a model of spoken-word recognition combining competition between alternative lexical candidates, and sensitivity to prosodic structure. In a ...
متن کاملLexical competition in spoken word recognition: A cross-modal phonological priming study
Partial overlaps in initial position between prime and target usually give rise to a null effect or to inhibitory effects. Priming effects are interpreted as resulting either from competition among lexical forms that present phonological similarity or from a decisional bias. In this experiment, the competitor set was strongly reduced. Auditory primes were nonwords containing a single initial-em...
متن کاملPhonological and syntactic competition effects in spoken word recognition: evidence from corpus-based statistics
As spoken language unfolds over time the speech input transiently activates multiple candidates at different levels of the system - phonological, lexical, and syntactic - which in turn leads to short-lived between-candidate competition. In an fMRI study, we investigated how different kinds of linguistic competition may be modulated by the presence or absence of a prior context (Tyler 1984; Tyle...
